With nearly 30 years of experience, Kim Morrison is a globally recognized leader and technical expert in the mining industry, particularly within the ESG space. From 2019 to 2024, she served as Newmont’s global function lead for tailings, dams, and heap leach in Denver, Colorado, overseeing critical infrastructure and leading the company’s implementation of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM). During this time, she also chaired the Steering Committee for the GeoStable Tailings Consortium.
For the past year, Kim supported the Colorado School of Mines, first as an Adjunct Professor and later as the Interim Director of the Tailings Center, a university-industry consortium. In July 2025, she returned to consulting serving as the Chief Technical Officer (CTO) for ATC Williams based in Melbourne where she provides strategic technical leadership while fostering a culture of excellence across ATC Williams’ service offerings.
Having authored or co-authored more than 50 technical publications, Kim notably served as managing editor for the Tailings Management Handbook: A Lifecycle Approach published by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) and served as the founding chair of SME’s Tailings & Mine Waste Committee. Her contributions to the mining industry have earned numerous accolades, including recognition in the 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining (2020), SME’s President’s Individual Citation Award (2020), AIME’s Environmental Stewardship Distinguished Service Award (2022), the Jerry R. Bayless Alumni Merit Award from Missouri University of Science & Technology (2023), and designation as an SME Fellow (2024).
